Living near New York City, I am very fortunate to be able to get fabric from many different places besides JoAnn Fabrics. JoAnn’s is great and all, but when you have access to better textiles and notions, you truly see a difference. I will say some of the cotton at JoAnn’s is great, but I am biased since they come from the company I work for :). Here are a list of some of my all time favorite stores and why I love them!
Mood Fabrics
225 W 37th St, New York, NY 10018
Of course I had to add Mood to my list of favorite places to shop. While it may not be at the top of my list, I do love going in and just exploring all of the rolls. I have bought fabric from Mood in the past, but it is also a great place to get inspiration.
Elegant Fabric
222 W 40th St, New York, NY 10018

Botani Trimmings
263 W 36th St, New York, NY 10018
Botani is an amazing store. Like the name they focus on buttons and trims. They have an entire wall dedicated to zippers and I can guarantee you will find the kind you are looking for. The best part is that they will shorten the zipper to the length you need at no extra cost, so make sure you know what you want before purchasing.
Bead World
57 W 38th St, New York, NY 10018
Having worked previously at a full service trim and embellishment company, I got to learn where to go when you want to buy beads and sequence. Bead World was a place that the company frequented and was well worth it. They have so much to choose from you are bound to find what you want, and even walk out with more then you expected to.
B&J Fabrics
525 7th Ave, New York, NY 10018
Last but not least is my all time favorite fabric store. B&J may be on the more expensive side, but when you go into the shop it feels more like a showroom then a fabric store. Bolts of fabric are not thrown all over the place, and everything has a place. You will also run into a lot more Project Runway Alumni here then at Mood. The other great part of the store is that, like mood, it is not on street level. This helps keep the store less crowded and allows for peaceful shopping.
There are so many more stores I could talk about, but these are some I frequent the most. What are some of your favorite shops? I love adding new places to my sourcing list.
